Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a carefully abrasive process to gently buff away the top layer of skin (stratum corneum) and remove dead skin cells. It improves your skin tone and texture. People choose dermabrasion for different reasons, but generally, it’s used to enhance the look of your skin, tackling issues such as sun damage, ageing, acne scarring, and other skin concerns.

Microdermabrasion is a painless, non-invasive, skin-rejuvenation procedure using a combination of a fine abrasive tip and vacuum suction applied to the skin.
Microdermabrasion treatments are one of the most gentle, fastest, and non-invasive cosmetic skin treatments around today. It works by mechanically exfoliating the outermost layer of dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling softer and looking younger and more vibrant.
There are no needles or anaesthetics required for a microdermabrasion procedure.
Vacuum pressure and speed can be adjusted depending on the sensitivity and tolerance of your skin. There is minimal to no recovery time, and most people immediately return to daily activity after a microdermabrasion treatment.
Microdermabrasion is considered a safe procedure for most skin types and colours.
People might choose to get the procedure if they have the following skin concerns:
fine lines and wrinkles
hyperpigmentation, age spots and brown spots
enlarged pores and blackheads
acne and acne scars
stretch marks
dull-looking skin complexion
uneven skin tone and texture
melasma
sun damage
Microdermabrasion is not recommended for people with severe active acne (stages 3 and 4). When acne nodules are closed and deep within the skin’s layers, rubbing, touching, or blasting the skin with exfoliating crystals will irritate your skin and worsen your acne. Also, people with sunburn, eczema and active rosacea are unsuitable candidates for this treatment.

Common side effects of Microdermabrasion include mild tenderness, swelling, and redness. These generally go away within a few hours after treatment.
You might be advised to use a moisturiser to minimise dry and flaky skin. Minor bruising may also occur. This is mostly caused by the suction process during the treatment.
There is little to no downtime after Microdermabrasion. You should be able to resume your daily activities immediately.
Keep your skin hydrated and use gentle skin care products. Avoid using topical acne medications for at least one day after treatment. It’s extremely important to protect your skin with sunscreen. Your skin can be more sensitive to the sun in the few weeks after the treatment.
You can expect to see noticeable results immediately after the procedure. The number of Microdermabrasion sessions needed will depend on the severity of your skin concerns as well as your expectations.
Your provider will likely design a plan for the initial number of sessions, as well as periodic maintenance treatments.
Avoid anything that raises your body temperature, such as hot showers, sauna, steam rooms and exercise for the first day after treatment.
Only use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser for the first week. We also recommend purchasing our take home hydrating masks to aid with recovery.
Avoid any skincare products that include active ingredients like AHA’s, BHA’s, retinols and vitamin C for 1 week.
Drink plenty of water to maintain your skin’s plump, fresh and hydrated appearance after your treatment.
Don’t pick at your skin: Microdermabrasion works by removing the outermost layer of the Epidermis (skin) and accelerates skin turn over. So, it’s common to experience some peeling of the skin after microdermabrasion. Avoid picking or peeling the skin as this can lead to delayed healing and potential scarring.
Stay sun safe: Microdermabrasion removes dead skin, revealing the soft, new skin underneath. This new skin is particularly susceptible to the harmful rays of the sun. For sun safety and protection, as always, continue to apply your SPF 50+ sunscreen every four hours after a microdermabrasion – especially when outside. We recommend the Balense UV Defiance SPF 50+ which has a silky, lightweight finish that does not leave residue like traditional sunscreen.
