Platelet rich plasma | prp
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an injectable treatment by which a person’s own blood is used. Platelets are key in the process of tissue healing, and the stimulation of new cells. PRP promotes collagen production, regenerates skin tissue, and reboots your cells into rejuvenating themselves. The release of growth factors stimulates the healing cascade process. PRP – softens fine lines and wrinkles, tightens the skin, and improves skin tone and texture, reduces pigment, and can help with melasma.

The treatment area is numbed with topical numbing cream to ensure maximum comfort during the procedure. PRP is prepared by taking a small sample of the patient’s blood. The tubes of blood are spun in a centrifuge device, during centrifugation the blood is separated into plasma, platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells by the centrifugal force. The separating gel present in the tube migrates above the blood cells and isolated the platelets and the plasma. PRP is then collected from the upper part of the tube.
The treatment area is thoroughly cleaned with prepped with chlorhexidine and alcohol solution. The PRP is then injected into the treatment site to promote healing, reverse the signs of ageing and matrix remodelling, resulting in skin stimulation.
The whole preparation process is simple and takes up to 10 minutes. The treatment itself can take up to 45 mins depending on the size of the area being treated.
Skin Texture and Elasticity
PRP increases vascularisation, neo-collagenesis, tone, skin thickness and elasticity. It can be used as a single treatment or combined with technologies such as fractional laser, LED, chemical peels, dermal fillers, and dermabrasion. Use your own platelet growth factors to improve skin tone, elasticity, thickness, and texture. PRP not only offers cosmetic skin improvements but stimulates the skin with results lasting up to a year.
Wrinkles and Dark Circles
PRP restores facial harmony by softening the skins texture and tone, as the localised action of the platelets at the treatment site triggers a biological reaction that ensure long-lasting results. Once PRP is injected into the dermis of the skin the released growth factors will stimulate the collagen production which will increase the skins volume while the skin becomes firmer and more radiant.
Scars
The beneficial growth factors in platelets help with the creation of new blood vessels while also regenerating tissue, this improves the texture of your skin. The use of PRP for scar therapy ameliorates the appearance of scars by stimulating the connective tissue cells called fibroblasts and epidermal cells called keratinocytes.
Post Laser
The combination of fractional laser treatment and PRP creates a powerful facial rejuvenation treatment that improves skin texture, tone and stimulates collagen production for a natural, long-last result. The analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of PRP help to control pain and significantly improve the speed of wound healing after laser or chemical peel treatments.

Three Weeks Before: Discontinue any steroid medications (with your doctors permission).
The Week Before: Do not take any ibuprofen, aspirin, or NSAIDs. Discontinue use of any anticoagulant medications. Discontinue herbs, supplements, or vitamins associated with blood thinning. Ask your doctor if you have concerns about any specific medications or supplements you take.
The Day Before: Drink plenty of water, eat well, and get a good night’s rest.
The Day Of: Stay hydrated and eat a full, nutritious meal.
A topical numbing cream is used to numb the skin. A very fine needle is used to inject the PRP, the injection itself may be slightly uncomfortable. As the PRP injection is intended to produce an inflammatory and healing response, most clients can expect the injected area to feel slightly tender and warm for the first day after the procedure. Please note that no steroidal, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (e.g. Nurofen, Ibuprofen, Aspirin, fish oils) and no alcohol should be used for 3 days pre & post procedure as it can interfere with the healing response.
Some mild discomfort may be felt while the PRP is being reinjected. The sensation typically felt is a burning or tingling sensation. This discomfort only lasts a few minutes after the PRP is injected. Ice (wrapped in clean gauze) can be applied if needed to aid any discomfort.
Cosmetic PRP is a simple and safe procedure. Most clients will have some redness at the end of treatment and the only potential ‘complication’ is mild swelling or bruising that may last from three to seven days.
PRP is extracted from your own blood, it is naturally resistant to biofilm so there is very low risk of infection, allergy, or immune reaction. As with all cosmetic and medical procedures, there are certain health conditions that will exclude patients. (Bleeding disorders / immunocompromised clients)
PRP itself does not generally cause adverse reactions. Sometimes there are minor side effects due to injecting technique or the area injected. The effect is very localised and lists as:
Pain
Swelling
Bleeding
Redness
Irritation
Ecchymosis
Platelet dysfunction syndrome
Critical thrombocytopenia platelet count <100 000 plts/
Microliter Hemodynamic instability
Septicaemia
Local infection at the site of the procedure
Patient unwilling to accept risk
Consistent use of NSAIDs within 48 hours of procedure is not recommended
Corticosteroid injection at treatment site within 1 month
Systemic use of corticosteroids within 2 weeks
Tobacco use
Recent fever or illness
Cancer – especially hematopoietic or of bone
HGB <10g/dl
Pregnant or Lactating women
Autoimmune diseases
Typically, first results are visible 2 weeks after treatment and full results around 3-4 months after, as platelets stimulate the release of growth factors which assist in collagen regeneration. Increasing the collagen in the patient’s skin means over time the skin will appear younger and fresher looking. Results will vary from one individual to the other.
Results from PRP injections can be seen for approx. 1-2 years after treatment. However, these results vary due to the individual’s variation in quality of Platelet Rich Plasma. While we cannot stop the aging process, we can slow it down. Results from PRP injections can be extended with proper at home skincare maintenance.
There is no significant downtime associated with PRP injections. However, after your treatment, your skin may be red and as with all injections you may have some light bruising. This is normal and can be expected. Redness usually lasts from one to 24 hours. You may also have light swelling in some areas. Factor this into the clients care planning and aim to offer treatment towards the end of the week, so clients have the weekend to recover. Healing time varies for everyone. Healing may take longer if PRP injections are paired with micro-needling. LED therapy before treatment may optimise PRP.
You should not touch the treated area or wash or apply anything to the skin after treatment for the first 4 hours. Please note It is good hygiene practice to wipe over your glasses and phone before putting on / near your face and wash your hands before touching your face or applying any cream for the next few days after treatment. Active creams / cleansers / scrubs and peels should not be used for 3-7 days after treatment.
Results can be seen after one treatment. Generally, 3 treatments are advised, one month apart but more may be indicated for some individuals. (e.g. smokers).
